Holiday Update

Hello Folks,

Hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season and the last few days of 2014. This is just a quick post to provide an update on what we have planned for the upcoming year.

Firstly, I am very delighted to take up presidential role from Manny. I would like to congratulate Manny for finishing his degree after presiding over the Student Chapter for the very eventful past 1.5 years. I wish Manny all the best in his future endeavors. At the same time, I would like to welcome Arwinder Jaspal, who will be taking over as the UBC ASHRAE Student Chapter's Vice-President during the next semester. Arwinder is a fourth-year Mech Undergrad Student who is expected to be graduating at the end of the upcoming semester. Mallory and Maxwell continue to be part of the executive team as Secretary and Treasurer.

Dr. William Bahnfleth
Secondly, we have a guest presentation coming up very soon! On January 7th, we plan on having a
seminar at UBC delivered by a very distinguished guest, Dr. William Bahnfleth from Penn State University. Dr. Bahnfleth is Professor and Director of the Indoor Environment Center in the Department of Architectural Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) in University Park, PA. Dr. Bahnfleth is also an ASHRAE Society Past President and an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer. We hope to gain interesting insight on emerging HVAC trends during the brief seminar. The tentative location and time is as follows:

When: January 7, 2015; 2pm - 3pm (Exact time TBD)
Where: BC Hydro Theater, CIRS (2260 West Mall)

Rogers Arena Tour, Vancouver

Hello Folks,

On Nov 19th was the Rogers Arena Tour, Vancouver. UBC-ASHRAE in collaboration with ASME and SNAME joined ASHRAE BC Chapter in the tour. Rogers Arena tour was excellent as it was student's night where we did networking with other students and industrial professionals, attended tour to the arena (ice rink and the refrigeration systems room) and the presentation. There was insights on the design changes in the refrigeration system and why the design was made. Thanks to the all students, presenters and the organizing team to make a whole show successful.

Rogers Arena was the last tour for 2014. In 2015, there will be one guest presentation and one tour from us. Stay tuned for that. There are some updates on UBC-ASHRAE executives part. Samarth Joshi will be our new president of UBC-ASHRAE from new year onward. Maxwell is a new executive in our team as well. I congratulate Samarth and Maxwell for coming into the team and wish them a good luck for the future endeavors. I would like to thank Branislav for all the support and ideas due to which, UBC-ASHRAE is able to conduct some student demanding guest presentation and tours.

Regards,

Manny

Presentation on Net Zero Energy Consumption Building Olympic Village (Millennium water) located at False Creek

Hello Folks,

On Wed Mar 05, we had with us Goran Ostojic, Managing Principal, Integral Group and BC ASHRAE student chair Branislav. Goran gave an incredible presentation on the design of Millennium water building (used by 2010 Vancouver Olympics athletes) giving us insights on evacuated solar tubes, radiant heating and cooling through capillary mat, active and passive systems, glazing performance, facade design, energy quality, Sewer heat recovery (water to water heat pumps),  rain water harvesting design and real time energy usage tracking concept used in the Millennium water building. Thank you to Goran and Branislav for the exceptional presentation and UBC-ASHRAE executive Mallory and Samarth for the support.

UBC-ASHRAE is planning to have a tour to Hillcrest Community Centre in the end of March. The date have not been confirmed by the engineers at Hillcrest. We will inform you as soon as we get a confirmation.
