September ASHRAE BC Meeting

For those of you who are interested in attending the September ASHRAE BC meeting, it will be on Wednesday Sept. 15. It's being held at Creekside Community Centre and will also include a tour of the Millennium Water 2010 Olympic Athletes Village.

For anyone interested in sustainability and green technologies, this would be a great opportunity to see it first hand. Millennium Water has been certified LEED Platinum has been called the greenest neighbourhood in the world. It's also a great way for students to meet engineers in industry and build contacts. Cost for students is $10, further details can be found at http://ashrae.bc.ca/bc/meetings/2010/ASHRAE_Sept_2010_Meeting_Notice.pdf

UBC Places Second in Design Competition

Congratulations to the UBC Student Design Team for placing second in the ASHRAE 2010 Student Design Project Competition! The team, consisting of 5 members of the UBC ASHRAE Student Chapter, were entered in the System Design Category which involved the HVAC system design for Ginsburg Tower at Florida Hospital in Orlando. In total, 14 schools were entered, and UBC impressed once again (in 2009 the UBC design team placed 3rd). The results of the competition were as follows:

1st Place: University of Central Florida
2nd Place: University of British Columbia
3rd Place: Algonquin College

In this photo, from left to right, are Kelly Ng, Jacob Allen, Jason Le, and Branislav Cvijetinovic (missing from photo is Esteban Kello). The industry mentor for the team was Geoff McDonell P.Eng from Aerius Engineering, and Dr. Nima Atabaki P.Eng from the UBC Mechanical Engineering department was the team advisor and supervisor.

In reward for their achievement, one team representative gets to attend the ASHRAE Winter Meeting this January in Las Vegas. The award includes travel and hotel for two nights, as well as entry to the ASHRAE Student Program on January 30, 2011 for their recognition.

Congratulations guys on an amazing accomplishment and a job well done!

President's Welcome

Hi everyone and welcome back to the new school year. It's been a while since the last time the UBC ASHRAE Student Chapter met so I'd first like to start off by introducing some of the changes that have occured. The new executive for 2010-2011 consists of myself as President, John Van as Vice-President, and Marcel Hollosy as Secretary. We are hoping to continue where we left off last year and further investigate the HVAC&R industry as well as discuss sustainability and other related topics.

Our preliminary agenda consists of meetings roughly once per month and chapter events such as building tours and guest speakers from industry. From speaking with students, some topics of interest this year are the role of new engineers in the industry and the development of new technologies in HVAC. Hopefully we can organize some speakers and tours that address these issues.

Updates on our first meeting will be posted once we finalize a date and time that works best for everyone. Until then, I'd just like to say welcome to the new ASHRAE year and hopefully I'll see you around campus.

Best Regards,

Jeff
