E.H. Price Tour

Hi All,

I would like to thank Justin Chu of E.H. Price and everyone that came out to the E.H. Price facility for making the event a success. Justin's presentation on ventilation provided valuable industry knowledge that is applicable to all facets of HVAC design.

Our next meeting will be later in the fall. I will keep everyone posted on the exact time and location as the details come to light.

As always, if you have any questions pertaining to the HVAC&R industry feel free to ask.

Cheers,
Jayson

President's Welcome

Hi Everyone,

I hope you all had a good summer and are looking forward to another year at UBC. As returning President I hope to build upon the success of last year, and to ensure that the UBC ASHRAE Student Branch remains sustainable long past my graduation. Our executive this year consists of myself, Vice President Manmohan Daid, and Secretary/Treasurer James Montgomery.

Manmohan was previously the Secretary/Treasurer for the student branch, and brings the expertise of an HVAC diploma to our group. James is a PhD candidate who specializes in filtration research, and will bring invaluable experience to our group.

As for our upcoming events, we will have our first meeting of the 2012-2013 school year in mid-September, which will be followed by a tour of the E.H. Price facility toward the end of September. Note that the dates are still tentative pending the schedules of incoming members returning from coop work terms. After this we will continue to have meetings on a monthly basis featuring guest speakers from industry and will have another tour in the spring.

I will update all members when the dates are solidified. As always, if you have any questions don't hesitate to email me at ubcashrae@gmail.com.

Cheers,
Jayson

March Student Branch Meeting

Hi Everyone,

Andrea Frisque's presentation on energy modeling for naturally ventilated buildings provided useful insight to some advanced energy modeling practices and software. First I would like to thank Andrea Frisque for her insightful presentation on energy modeling and elaboration on advanced practices and software. Energy modeling is becoming a very valuable skill with the increasing enforcement of ASHRAE 90.1, and having a base knowledge as a student could be the edge that gets you a job.

I would also like to thank everyone for the continued support throughout the 2011-2012 school year. The UBC ASHRAE Student Branch has seen record membership and has been very active thanks to everyone's combined effort. Since I will be continuing my duties as Student Branch President next year, I hope to see as many of you back as possible.

I wish you all the best through exams, graduation (if applicable), and the summer.

Jayson

January Student Branch Meeting

Happy New Year everybody. I hope your break was as enjoyable mine.

Our meeting yesterday was a great success. Thanks again to the Mech department for granting us the majority of our requested 2012 budget! Among other things, we are now able to serve refreshments at the meetings and subsidize BC Chapter attendance.

Kyle Reese's talk on LEED provided some very useful and practical insight into the merits and criticisms of the rating system. Considering that one of ASHRAE's newest Standards (189.1) is based upon the LEED system, knowledge of the topic is essential to those with interest in the building system industry.

Tomorrow is the BC ASHRAE Chapter's 60th anniversary dinner at the River Rock Resort. ASHRAE Inc. President Ron Jarnagin will be there to speak on "Sustaining ASHRAE Through Leadership". If you have not RSVP'ed to the meeting I highly suggest you do since this is a VERY relevant topic to student members such as yourselves.

That's all for now. There will be more information on the presentation after the meeting.

Regards,
Jayson
