Hi Everyone,
Andrea Frisque's presentation on energy modeling for naturally ventilated buildings provided useful insight to some advanced energy modeling practices and software. First I would like to thank Andrea Frisque for her insightful presentation on energy modeling and elaboration on advanced practices and software. Energy modeling is becoming a very valuable skill with the increasing enforcement of ASHRAE 90.1, and having a base knowledge as a student could be the edge that gets you a job.
I would also like to thank everyone for the continued support throughout the 2011-2012 school year. The UBC ASHRAE Student Branch has seen record membership and has been very active thanks to everyone's combined effort. Since I will be continuing my duties as Student Branch President next year, I hope to see as many of you back as possible.
I wish you all the best through exams, graduation (if applicable), and the summer.

January Student Branch Meeting
Happy New Year everybody. I hope your break was as enjoyable mine.
Our meeting yesterday was a great success. Thanks again to the Mech department for granting us the majority of our requested 2012 budget! Among other things, we are now able to serve refreshments at the meetings and subsidize BC Chapter attendance.
Kyle Reese's talk on LEED provided some very useful and practical insight into the merits and criticisms of the rating system. Considering that one of ASHRAE's newest Standards (189.1) is based upon the LEED system, knowledge of the topic is essential to those with interest in the building system industry.
Tomorrow is the BC ASHRAE Chapter's 60th anniversary dinner at the River Rock Resort. ASHRAE Inc. President Ron Jarnagin will be there to speak on "Sustaining ASHRAE Through Leadership". If you have not RSVP'ed to the meeting I highly suggest you do since this is a VERY relevant topic to student members such as yourselves.
That's all for now. There will be more information on the presentation after the meeting.
Regards,
Jayson

November Student Branch Meeting
Thank you to everyone that was able to make it from the Student Branch, and Dr. Atabaki's MECH 473 class for being a great audience. This meeting featured Mihaela Spulber for a presentation on VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) Technology. Mihaela's presentation shed light on some of the energy saving benefits that this technology can offer. I have sent the PowerPoint file to all the members of the student branch, and if anyone else would like to review the slides I would be happy to forward you the presentation.
There will be no December meeting due to final exams, but if anyone would be interested in arranging a tour or informal meeting I would likely be able to make it happen. Good luck on exams, and Happy Holidays.
Regards,
Jayson

October BC ASHRAE Chapter Meeting
Firstly, I would like to thank everyone from the Student Branch that attended the BC ASHRAE meeting last week. Our turnout was so good that some people were confused as to whether or not it was Student Night!
The BC Chapter meetings are a great networking experience and can provide insight into practices used in industry. Dennis Knight's presentation on BIM (Building Information Modelling) demonstrated many of the uses and advantages of an integrated design system.
I will continue to keep student branch members up to speed with the scheduling of UBC Student Branch and BC Chapter meetings, and look forward to seeing everyone again at the November Student Branch meeting.

October Student Branch Meeting
Hi Everyone,
I would like to thank everyone that came out to our first UBC ASHRAE Student Branch meeting of the new school year. The meeting featured Chris Collett, the current President of the BC ASHRAE Chapter, for a presentation on IAQ. Chris's presentation was very interesting and shed light on common problems and troubleshooting strategies in managing IAQ.
The next BC Chapter meeting is on Thursday, October 13th at the Italian Cultural Center. You can find the meeting itinerary at the following link: http://ashrae.bc.ca/bc/meetings/2011/ASHRAE_Oct_2011_%20Meeting_Notice.pdf . The cost for students is $10, and it is well worth it. If you are interested in carpooling or going as a group, you can contact me at ubcashrae@gmail.com.
I will be in touch with current members over the next few weeks as I arrange a site visit and November meeting. If you are reading this and are interested in joining the student branch, you can reach me at the email above.
