Upcoming Event: UBC Campus Energy Tour with FREE PIZZA

From 2011 to 2016, UBC spent $88 million upgrading its district energy system from steam to hot water. The heart of this new system is Campus Energy Centre (CEC), a $24 million state of the art boiler plant on Agronomy Rd.

A new district energy system was needed, since the steam system constructed in the 1920s was nearing the end of its useful lifespan. Another reason for the upgrade was to combat climate change. UBC discovered that 80% of its carbon footprint was from the natural gas used to heat buildings. The new hot water system is expected to save 24% of this natural gas.

The CEC is targeting LEED Gold Certification and will become only the 2nd UBC building to achieve this status.
